Endoscopy & Colonoscopy

OVERVIEW

What is an endoscopy and colonoscopy?

An endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract and colonoscopy are surgical procedures to examine the bowels using a lighted scope (endoscope or colonoscope) with a tiny camera attached at the end. An upper GI endoscopy entails placing a bendable tube (endoscope) through the mouth, which is carefully guided down the oesophagus into the stomach and intestine. When performing a colonoscopy, Dr Umar passes a flexible tube (colonoscope) through the anal region, which is carefully guided through the region to examine surrounding tissues and other vital adjacent structures.

How does Dr Umar carry out an endoscopy?

Dr Umar, an experienced endoscopist, sedates the patient and places a flexible telescope (endoscope) down the patient's throat into the duodenum. Beforehand, he pumps air into the cavity to see extensively inside the area.

Typically, an upper endoscopy is performed to treat the following conditions:

  • Stomach ulcers
  • Acid reflux
  • Hiatal Hernias
  • Gastrointestinal conditions

How does Dr Umar perform a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a surgical procedure that allows Dr Umar to examine the large intestine extensively. As a result, Dr Umar inserts a bendable instrument (colonoscope) through the rectum and guides it through the colon. A colonoscopy is designed to suction liquid-like stool, irrigate the colon lining like a water jet, pump air into the bowel to view the site extensively and work within the bowel using tiny surgical equipment.

During a colonoscopy, Dr Umar will remove abnormal growths, such as polyps, and transfer these samples for further analysis. He may also treat any other issues that he finds.

Dr Umar performs a colonoscopy for the following reasons:

  • Diagnose and treat colon polyps
  • Evidence of tumours
  • Test for and treat ulcers
  • Diagnose and treat inflammation within the colon
  • To treat narrowing within the colon (strictures)
  • Removal of foreign objects inside the colon
